Thank you for completing your individual TAIQ assessment.  As noted in the assessment introduction, "Diversity is the state of being different.  Inclusion is the involvement and empowerment of this difference; a recognition of worth and value."

While there are many behaviors which impact inclusion, research has shown that the following eight specific behavioral characteristics significantly impact a person's ability to be inclusive:

Presentation
Associated with a growth mindset, an open mind embraces and appreciates diversity of thought, perspective, background, culture, approach, gender, and working style.  Receptive to learning from others, a person with an open mind creates and promotes an environment of trust that nurtures the free flow of ideas.

OPEN

Curiosity is associated with a passion for continual learning, which calls upon the traits of open- mindedness, inquiry, and empathy. It involves a desire to understand how others view and experience the world and the quality of being open to more than one interpretation. Curiosity entails a tolerance for ambiguity, receptivity to change, and flexibility in thinking, which require taking risks and making decisions confidently in the face of incomplete information and uncertainty.

Being aware includes an understanding of self and others. It involves conscious knowledge of one’s own character, identity, values, beliefs, assumptions, personal blind spots, and biases. The state of awareness allows one to see the impact of these factors and life experiences upon how one perceives, interprets, and interacts with the world. Through self-reflection and a suspension of judgment, one can move from a personal view to a mindset that embraces diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

Cultural competence is the ability to understand, communicate, interact, and forge relationships with people across cultures. To engage effectively across differences requires emotional intelligence, adaptability, and sensitivity.

An unbiased mindset holds an impartial and fair view towards people and situations. Described as freedom from prejudice and judgment, being unbiased also encompasses the qualities of an open mind, empathy, and a willingness to understand other people’s feelings and perspectives, and to use that knowledge to guide actions.

A collaborative approach refers to the process through which a group of people constructively and collectively explore their ideas to generate solutions that extend beyond the limited vision of a single person. This involves maximizing individual contribution while leveraging the collective intelligence of everyone involved. This process includes communication, negotiation, empowerment, contribution, and the sharing of information and resources as a group works together to achieve a common goal.

Supporting and promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace not only produces better individual performance outcome but also overall business results. Research has shown that diversity with inclusion reaps numerous benefits: stimulates creativity and innovation; yields better decision-making; promotes higher employee engagement; and enhances employee retention, thereby, driving the bottom line. A diverse and inclusive culture also increases an organization’s brand and reputation and enables access to more customers, markets, and business partners.

PERFORMANCE / GOAL ORIENTED

Courage involves questioning, speaking up, and bravely challenging the status quo to address the wider agenda. It also includes setting aside personal interests to achieve what needs to be done. A person of courage acts on convictions and principles even when it requires personal risk-taking.

COURAGEOUS

While Open, Aware, Unbiased, and Performance/Goal-Oriented are distinct behaviors, they form a path to greater inclusion. First, it’s important to be Open to consider new things. Once you are Open, you become better attuned, or Aware, to how everyone thinks and feels. This awareness helps you to consider your own impartiality and to become more Unbiased. Unbiased behavior can then drive more Performance/Goal-Orientation from leveraging diverse talent and ideas.

Curious, Culturally Competent, Collaborative, and Courageous are also distinct behaviors that require mindfulness. Similar to the first four behaviors, these also form a path to greater inclusion. Being Curious helps to build greater Cultural Competence. With greater Cultural Competence it becomes easier to Collaborate with people of different backgrounds. By being Collaborative with more groups, deeper relationships are forged, which empowers and motivates people to be more Courageous.  

These behaviors serve as building blocks for developing different leadership skills. For example, “Empathy” is an important skill that can be built with a combination of behaviors including being Open, Aware, Unbiased, Curious and Culturally Competent.

How a person Thinks, Acts and Interacts along these behavioral dimensions can vary significantly 

For the purposes of this assessment, we have defined the three categories as follows:

Think

to have a particular opinion, belief or idea about someone or something (ex. feeling, judgment, sentiment, assumption, reflection, introspection, etc.)

Interact

to act in such a way as to have a direct effect on another; must involve at least two parties and corresponding reactions (ex. exchange, correspond, engage, speak with)

Act

to proactively bring about a change without direct personal engagement with others does not require a reaction (ex. promote, encourage, advocate, initiate, drive, write, read, seek, steer, foster, listen, welcome, accept)
